South Beach, also nicknamed SoBe, is a neighborhood in the city of Miami BeachFloridaUnited States, located due east of Miami city proper between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The area encompasses Miami Beach south of Dade Boulevard.

This area was the first section of Miami Beach to be developed, starting in the 1910s, due to the development efforts of Carl G. Fisher, the Lummus Brothers, and John S. Collins, the latter of whose construction of the Collins Bridge provided the first vital land link between mainland Miami and the beaches.

The area has gone through numerous artificial and natural changes over the years, including a booming regional economy, increased tourism, and the 1926 hurricane, which destroyed much of the area. As of 2010, 39,186 people lived in South Beach

Art Deco, which is the famed architecture in the heart of South Beach, is not only an architectural style, but is a global design aesthetic that first trended in Paris in 1925. Art Deco then spread worldwide during the 1920’s through the early 40’s and popularized during this time period in South Beach. Further, in 1979, the Art Deco District in South Beach was listed on the National Register of Historic Places with the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world. The Art Deco District in the heart of South Beach is located between 5th and 23rd Streets along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue. So, if you find yourself strolling along one of these celebrated streets, you will notice the Art Deco architecture on the exterior façade of many of the buildings, but some of the most quintessential Art Deco buildings in South Beach are The Colony Hotel, Park Central Hotel, Essex House, The Clevelander, The Delano, The Webster, The Breakwater, The Raleigh and The Tides.

Common Design, Construction, or Architectural Types

South Miami architecture is anchored on Art Deco. Their version of Art Deco consists of vibrant tropical colors, bringing the outdoors indoors with floor-to-ceiling windows and open balconies, palms and other tropical foliage, and metallic and glass accents. There are also some constructions featuring Italian or Spanish influences.
